Eating Right

John 4:1-42

Dear health seekers,

Trying to find the right things to eat can often times be very difficult.  In trying to buy healthy food, many cite the cost of it to prevent them from eating right.  There is certainly some truth to this.  Often times however it is a matter of some poor choices on our part, or a reliance on old ways of eating.  It is hard to break habits.  There are arguments out there that state that even our healthy food choices are not as rich in nutrition as they were twenty or thirty years ago.  Yet, our choices of eating healthy still reap benefits.

Look at the encounter that Jesus had with the Samaritan woman at the well(John 4).  After opening her eyes to her sin and her need for living water to give her true Life, she went to tell others of Jesus.  His disciples who were taken back at the fact that He was even talking with a Samaritan woman(which was very much against the custom of the time for a variety of reasons), urged Him to eat something.   Jesus replied that He had food that they knew nothing about(John 4:32).  They wondered “Could someone have brought him food?”

Jesus responded what this food He had was:  “My food, is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.”  He went on to tell them this:  John 4:35-38 (NIV)
35″ Do you not say, ‘Four months more and then the harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.
36 Even now the reaper draws his wages, even now he harvests the crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together.
37 Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true.
38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”

The food He was speaking of was doing the Father’s will, more specifically sharing the Good News.  In fact He had just had a “meal” when He shared of Himself and the fact of who He was with the Samaritan woman.  We read in verse 39-41 how many Samaritans became believers that day.  The will of the Father is that none perish.  Because of Jesus stepping outside of cultural rules and sharing with this woman many believed and He was sustained by the “food” that He enjoyed.

Many of us think that we are eating healthy, but when it comes down to it, many are malnourished.  Some in fact may never even have partaken of some of the best food.  The meal of sharing Jesus, sharing the Gospel escapes their “plates”.  It doesn’t need to.  It is again a choice.  A choice to be available to what God wants to do in and through you.  Be that “living sacrifice” today.  Enjoy a good meal.  Because of your good eating habits others will reap eternal benefits as well.

 Hungry again,
