Star Gazers

Readings for August 11, 2008  Matthew 2, Proverbs 2

Matthew 2:2 (NIV)
2 and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.”

Matthew 2:10 (NIV)
10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.

Dear star gazers,

After seeing some of the stars that God has created on the DVD by Loui Giglio, I wonder what the star looked like that directed the Magi to where Jesus was.  This was His star.  It must be some spectacular star.  I wonder where it is now.  It is probably being showcased somewhere.  Maybe when we get to heaven it will be one that is preserved for us to marvel at.  All of creation is to point us to our Creator.  But this one star directed the Magi to the Word, the Word that was in the beginning, the Word that was with God, the Word that was God, the Word that created everything, the Word that became flesh and dwelt with men and women. (John 1:1-14)  Check out the stars tonight.  Where is His star?  I do not know, but I am more thankful that the ONE the star was pointing out, lives in me!  Praise Him!

Yesterday in our readings in Proverbs I was humored by  Proverbs 1:17 (NIV)
17 How useless to spread a net in full view of all the birds!

It reminded me of when I was a Sr. in High School and my first 2 years in college.  I was working as a janitor(now probably called an interior environmental specialist) and my boss used to try to hide from me and scare me, sometimes reaching out from under a desk to grab my foot or vacuum cleaner.  Often he would try to hide in a closet that I was going to go in to get supplies.  I can’t tell you how many times he did that with me being able to see him go in the closet.  Then I would grab a glass of water open up the door throw it on him and quickly shut the door.

“How useless to spread a net in full view of all the birds!”

The point of this verse and others around it is that a life of self seeking doesn’t pay, and you should be careful not to get involved with those who are living a life of sin.  Many recently up at camp made decisions that they needed to consider who they were spending time with, separating themselves from people that were taking them away from their Lord, “people spreading nets”.  Pray for one another as we contemplate how we are to be salt and light in this world.  We are in the world but not to be of the world.( James 4:4 ) Check out Proverbs well to help determine who we are to listen to.

May the decisions we make honor our God and show others the way to Jesus as the star showed the way to the baby Jesus, nearly 2000 years ago.

Still checking out the stars,
