Will you hear your name?

Readings- Luke 10, Psalm 22

Luke 10:17-20 (NIV)
17 The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.”
18 He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.
20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

Dear family,

I remember at camp this past summer having two guys from Emmaus College come and work at the camp and give us information about their college.  As part of their presentation they were giving away shirts to some of those who turned in cards with their names on it. The cards with a persons name on it was picked by random, and if their name was called they would receive a cool shirt.   There have been many times in the past where I was in similar situations waiting for my name to be called to see if I would win something.  It is great when you hear your name called.  Last things that I won were hunting two way radios.  It had been a great evening anyway, but made it even more fun.  It brings a sense of excitement even if the event you were in, was quite boring or just somewhere you really did not want to be.

The disciples were quite excited as they returned to Jesus to report from their “mission trip” all that had happened.(see Luke 10:17-20)  One of the things that brought them joy was “even the demons submit to us in your name”.  What was the reply of our Lord?  He told them that they had been given much authority over all the power of the enemy.  But, He told them, even though this may bring joy, you should really rejoice because your names are written in heaven.

That is something that should bring the greatest joy to all of us who have trusted in Jesus as Lord and Savior.  It doesn’t matter what the circumstances are around us in life whether demons are submitting to us in the name of Jesus, or if like David in Psalm 22, we are being put down and suffering.  Ultimately David knew and we know that God will ultimately deliver those that are His own.  I do not know about you, but my name is written in Heaven.  I do not have to sit here wondering if my name will be called.  It is written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.  I pray that you have that confidence, and that today you will experience true joy in the midst of a difficult day, even a crisis.  May you know the loving touch of our God and the security in Christ in these days of uncertainty.  He is Faithful and True!

Revelation 19:11 (NIV)
11 I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True.

Waiting for my name to be called,

Steve
