A teachable moment

Camp may be over, but our learning is not!

Jesus’ Status: Enjoying a teachable moment-To serve or be served.

Readings Mark 10:35-45

Dear family,

Have you ever been talking about something really close to your heart, when somebody says something totally self-centered, as if they did not listen to a word you said? It can really test whether you are a servant or not. Most of us will internally be saying, “Are you for real?”, “Did you hear a word I said?”

Jesus just finished saying that He was headed towards death. James and John approach Him and say, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask of You.” Not starting out so good, are they? Seems maybe a little self focused, huh? We certainly are not concerned with our position in life!

 Then they request that they might have prominent positions in the Kingdom which they thought Jesus was about to bring into existence. The Jewish nation had been waiting for the Millennial Kingdom, and they mistakenly thought now was the time for the Kingdom. Wrong, in the sense that it was not time for the Kingdom to be expressed as they hoped, right in the fact that they were with the King. We never make a mistake in what God is doing in our lives, do we? How quickly we should identify with these two disciples!

What is Jesus’ response?

Go against the flow. You see in the culture how self-serving behavior is the way. If you truly want to be a leader in my disciples, you need to learn to serve one another, put others first. “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

 I loved the poster that showed all sorts of fish swimming one way, and one swimming the other. This is the best I can do to reproduce it.

-> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> ->-> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> ->-> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> ->-> -> ->-> -> -> -> -> -> -> ->-> -> -> -> -> -> -> ->  ->    -> ->-> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> ->-> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> ->-> -> -> ->   ->-> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> ->-> -> ->->  <-    -> -> -> -> -> -> ->   -> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> ->-> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> ->-> -> -> -> ->   -> -> -> ->-> -> -> -> <-  ->-> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> ->-> -> ->-> -> -> -> -> -> -> ->-> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> ->-> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> ->-> -> -> -> -> -> -> -> ->-> -> ->

Which way are you swimming?

With the self servers, that is the larger “school” of thought. Or will we serve today?

Maybe better put, will we allow Him to serve others through us?

That is how Jesus walked.

That was His status.

So thankful that He served me first,

Steve
